Maximizing Time with Your Doctor PDF Print E-mail

Doctors see dozens of patients a day, maybe more during the dreaded cold and flu season. So if you feel rushed at your next appointment, there's a good reason for that. Maximizing your time at the doctor's office can ensure that all of your concerns are addressed and helps your physician obtain a better, more well-rounded picture of your current health and past issues.

Before Your Appointment

Prior to your next appointment, make sure to jot down the following items for your doctor:

  • Any changes since your last appointment, including changes in sex life, appetite, mood, body, etc.
  • Any questions you want to ask
  • A list of all your current medications, vitamins, and supplements that you are taking.
  • Consider keeping a health diary to track changes as they occur.

At Your Appointment

Make sure to go over questions about your health, diet, medications, etc. while you have your doctor's full attention. The American Heart Association has a good list of questions to ask about heart health, including the following:

  • What is my goal cholesterol level?
  • What type of foods should I eat? What foods should I limit?
  • What should I know about my medications? Side effects? Interactions with other medicines/supplements?
  • How often should I check my blood pressure?
  • Do I need to lose/gain any weight?
  • Given my current health, what kinds of exercises can I do?
